House deposit
savings calculator
Work out how long it could take to save your deposit, or how much to put aside each month. Start with an estimate. Change it when your plans change.
Your savings estimate
Example figures · editableA starting point.
Not a promise.
Enter your figures, then calculate to see your savings target, the gap and a monthly plan.
- Your savings target
- Deposit
- Other costs entered
- Already saved
- Still to save
Use your own amount, from 0–100,000,000. The original estimate stays above.
This is a savings estimate, not a mortgage offer or a date you can buy. A lender will assess borrowing separately. Buying costs you have not entered are excluded.
Track this goal in Owndate — open in browser ↗Open the free app and add your target manually. This calculator does not transfer your figures.

A deposit plan,
with room for other costs.
For an example home price of £250,000 and a chosen 10% deposit, the deposit target is £25,000. Add an illustrative £5,000 for other costs and the total target becomes £30,000.
With £8,000 already saved, there is £22,000 left. Saving £750 a month would take 30 monthly contributions. At £1,000 a month, it would take 22. To cover the same gap in 24 months, the monthly amount would be about £916.67.
These are example inputs, not typical house prices, recommended deposit percentages or estimates of your buying costs. The calculation assumes no interest and no changes to prices.
After the estimate
Keep the plan current after payday.
A calculator gives you a starting point. Owndate gives you somewhere to keep the goal and log what you save.
Add a “House deposit and buying costs” goal with the total target from your result. Enter your monthly savings pace and log the savings you have already set aside. Update the plan as your figures change.
If you already use Owndate, check your deposits and goals before adding this one. Do not log existing savings a second time. Your goal order affects the plan’s projections.
Owndate does not hold your money, move it or connect to your bank. You record deposits yourself.

Before you plan
A few boundaries.
How do you calculate the time to save?
We multiply the home price by your chosen deposit percentage, round the deposit to the nearest penny or cent, add your estimate of other costs, and subtract what you have already saved. We divide the remaining amount by your monthly saving and round up to the next whole month. For a chosen number of months, we divide the gap by those months and round the monthly saving up to the next penny or cent.
Does the result include interest or a Lifetime ISA bonus?
No. This calculator counts the savings figures you enter and future monthly contributions only. It does not model interest, investment returns, government schemes, eligibility or withdrawal rules. Check the current rules separately before relying on a bonus. No investment growth or outcome is guaranteed.
Does reaching the deposit mean I can get a mortgage?
No. This tool plans savings, not borrowing. It does not assess your income, credit history, mortgage payments or lender eligibility. Reaching the target is not a promise that you can buy.
Can I use it outside the UK?
The arithmetic works with any of the listed currencies. The tool does not calculate local taxes, fees or mortgage requirements, so enter your own estimates. “Deposit” here means the money you plan to put towards the purchase, also called a down payment. Changing the currency label does not convert amounts.
Where are my figures stored?
This calculator keeps your inputs in the page while it is open. Clearing or reloading it removes them. Figures are not saved, sent to an analytics service or transferred to the app. If you manually add a plan to Owndate, the app stores it in that browser on that device. Export a JSON backup from Settings before clearing browser data or switching devices. Owndate does not automatically sync plans between devices.
Do I have to share my progress?
No. Keep the plan private if you prefer. If you choose to export a card from Owndate, check it for amounts and other details before sharing it.
